Alright guys, we gotta talk about this.
It's longish but I'll love you forever if you'll take the time to read and hear what I'm saying. And it makes me sad to read all those "I got one just so I got one" and "I got one that I won't use EXCEPT everyone else is going there, too" comments. Doesn't mean I don't love you guys but ... yeah. Just maybe hear me out?
I got the impression that for most of you DW is just the new "in thing" ... and I'm not blaming you 'cause I was thinking just like that a couple weeks ago when I first started getting into the topic.
Thing is though: I love DW by now. Didn't take me all that long to get do that either. Spent a few hours reading a lot of things and lookin' around and by the time
x_pixel_x got me an account I was already in love.
I purchased my Premium Paid Account (PPA) for one year a few hours after DW opened their shop last night. I won't get a seed account. Not because I don't have the money (which I don't but this is not the point here) but because I plan on supporting that site with more than just a one-time 200 bucks payment. PPA costs $40 now and will cost $50 after six months of Open Beta. Which means: Next year I'll be paying $50 for my account. And thinking that I plan on not abandoning the world of LJ/DW anytime soon, I hope to be providing DW with more than $200 with time.
What I'm trying to say is: DW is something I put my faith in. So yeah, I have been buying Paid Accounts at LJ for years, too. And I love LJ. I do. It's the place where I met amazing people who I love even more and who I feel I can trust. Guys, I met
silme711,
wiccaqueen and
kohaku1977 here - who are dear friends to me in RL. I met
myloveshine who's another important person to me by now. And I could continue that list 'cause there a lot of people I met because of LJ and who I love and don't wanna lose.
So, yeah: I love LJ. But I love DW more.
I'm not gonna abandon LJ because I know a lot of you guys won't any time soon either. But if everyone of you keeps on thinking that they're going to move when everyone else is ... well, no one's ever going to march forward.
But honestly? I think DW is worth it. Because DW is a place for people like us.
I'm not saying that LJ is all bad. Think I made my point about loving LJ. But LJ's owners aren't people who like guys like us. Guys with strong opinions and guys who're in fandom.
LJ's owners don't like the fandom-aspect of LJ and that's a fact. They love their Russian base and don't care all that much about their Non!Russian users. (This is NOT me bashing Russia, this is me bashing LJ!bosses.)
DW on the other hand. Well, one of the DW owners (Denise, to be precise) is in fandom (SG I think) and GETS fandom. She's a Lesbian so I'm pretty sure she gets even the Slash!Part of fandom. And this? It's huge.
So maybe DW is not able to support fandom all the way because - let's face it - RPS/RPF isn't exactly what celebrities like to see from their fanbase and the whole episode!piracy isn't helping either but DW is not against fandom!creations as a whole. Actually, DW is a place for people who create things (says so everywhere)!
So, DW is the future of fandom - and don't tell me you don't care about that! Most of you are in one fandom or another and I bet you wouldn't be thrilled if LJ were to shut down fandom some time. And that's what they wanna do.
Another thing that's really cool about DW: So many cool features and improvements. They took the LJ basic code alright but they cleaned it up and made it better and are working on making it even better than that.
Look at the list of things that are going to be/already are different between LJ and DW. And let me quote a few things I like especially for one reason or another.
This sounds confusing at first but really: It's not!
I always disliked the length-limit on interests ...
\o/ Just me being happy about SOMEONE acknowledging that there are more things than male, female and no answer.
\o/
\o/ \o/ \o/
I think that's handy.
And more stuff to come. That list is way longer, too.
So, uhm ... now that I talked a lot I hope you'll dedicate some more time to read a few of the things that helped convincing me.
Like:
How DW is gonna be financed and stay ad-free
Updates about the DW status
What type of accounts are there and what can they do?
PS: If you - for any reason - wanna link back to this, it's public and will stay public so you can tell your friends to read my strong love!opinion about DW as well ;o)

The "friends" concept has been split into its two functions - "subscriptions" for the journals you read (these appear on your reading page), and "access" for people you allow to read your locked posts. (Access filters are currently in place. Reading filters will come shortly after open beta.)
This sounds confusing at first but really: It's not!
Increased length-limits on usernames, entries, comments, and polls. Removed word count limit on interests. Poll creator also has more sensible defaults.
I always disliked the length-limit on interests ...
Addition of another option on the "gender" field: instead of "female, male, unspecified", the choices are now "female, male, other, unspecified".
\o/ Just me being happy about SOMEONE acknowledging that there are more things than male, female and no answer.
Allowing users to describe why they chose the particular adult-content setting they chose, so you can (for instance) say "NSFW for image of naked people" or "18+ for violent content", etc.
\o/
The ability to upload more than one user icon at a time.
\o/ \o/ \o/
Community maintainers will be able to make certain changes to posts made to their communities: adding an to a post that doesn't already have one, selecting a more restrictive security level (changing public to members-only, etc), selecting a more restrictive adult-content warning (none to 14+; 14+ to 18+)
I think that's handy.
And more stuff to come. That list is way longer, too.
