It's the same patch of ice!
Aug. 15th, 2024 09:02 pmIt was just 4 of us this session because one of us is moving, and another one has dropped out due to personal reasons. Aether is not going to continue with the party from now on. We'll get into a narrative explanation for that next time.
We're back in the ice tunnel with Tigress, Cadmus, Ronnie, and Paul (although Paul's player was absent today). Cadmus rerolls the Arcana check for the ice spear on his turn and manages to hit the DC to figure out that he could try using it on the ice wall to brute-force his way through the ice instead of trying to melt it with magical fire. Magically, 5ft of wall come off immediately!
The crew keeps going and keeps running into Ice Devils. They usually manage to kill them in a round or two - The Tigress even hit a nat 20 on an attack and took one down in a single blow. Ronnie gets real close to zero (she had 1 HP left) but Cadmus gave her 3 to bring her back to over half, and after Paul got down to less than half, Ronnie gave him the one hit point she has to give per day, while Cadmus snuck in another HP on Paul from behind.
Cadmus has noticed that Paul appears to be afraid of him because of the fire and therefore doesn't know if Paul would want him to touch him. Since Paul's player wasn't around for this, I ruled that Cadmus managed to sneak in an HP worth of healing on Paul while he was distracted by Ronnie. This was after Paul punched the last Ice Devil so hard it died.
Earlier, while they were still a good way away from the end of this ice tunnel, Ronnie said she doubted that they could fight whatever's waiting for them at the end of this tunnel. Cadmus reassured her that they would just come back and try again if they failed this time. Ronnie argued that nothing would've changed, they'd still be as weak as before, but Cadmus said that they're learning new things all the time, and next time they'll know more - mainly what to expect - and will be better prepared (if it comes to that!)
Ronnie was still doubtful and Cadmus said that it takes time to get good at something when you've never done it before. Ronnie seemed to believe at least that much.
We also had a few nat 1 rolls in this combat. The Tigress rolled a Nat 1 and dropped her weapon, and then Cadmus beefed his attack in the same round (not a nat 1 but still a miss). As I had ruled earlier that The Tigress slipped on a patch of ice to lose her weapon, James said that Cadmus also slipped and that's why he missed. Then Ronnie rolled a Nat 1 a little bit later, in a different spot, and dropped her hand crossbow. That's just what happens in ice tunnels! Sometimes you slip!
I had a longer tunnel prepared but I ended up capping it after 6 ice devils because I didn't want it to get too repetitive and boring. I made them roll a group luck check which both Cadmus and Tigress failed, Paul succeeded, and Ronnie got a Nat 20 on. Because of the Nat 20, I ruled that they succeeded in their luck check and they took no more damage from the remaining ice devils in the tunnel.
They're having a long rest, because almost all of them have lost HP, and Cadmus is the one to notice that even though the tunnel is freezing shut behind them again, it's going to take longer than their long rest will take.
We'll come back next time with long rest RP, and to find out exactly who or what is waiting behind the big double doors at the end of this tunnel.
However, we won't be back until the 2nd of September. We're moving back to Monday game time slots, and to make sure that Kay is okay to play after moving and starting a new job, we're skipping the other August game.
